Starring in Kin (a Mediacorp drama series), TV Star @acmossadeg shares his views on how he stays focused on achieving his fitness goals.
Training intensity is important when working out to reach your goal. How do you achieve and maintain your training intensity?
At the moment, my goals are to hit a higher 1RM for my Bench, Deadlift, Squat and Overhead Press so I’m always lifting heavy weights for low repetitions. A big, carb-heavy meal is essential before a workout to hit these numbers with good form and coffee definitely helps. Inside the gym, I try not to get too distracted with my phone and I make sure my music is loud enough to block out everything else but not too loud that it’s a distraction. Then it’s all about taking each repetition at a time, taking note of what could be better.

LIFT. LOVE. LAUGH. I wanted to record myself doing the 140kg Deadlift to illustrate why it is the King of exercises, requiring the whole body to work together to lift the maximum load. But most of these muscles perform an isometric contraction to stabilise the entire body and the load it's lifting so it doesn't look that obvious. However, check out the core and how thick it looks! That's what it looks like when you take a very deep breath of air in and brace your core to maintain a neutral spine. Plus, you know.. All that Mac & Cheese I stuffed my face with as fuel for this intense Back & Tricep workout.
How do I find what drives me to exercise?
When I first started, I wanted to be ready for National Service and look aesthetic but now it’s become such a huge part of my lifestyle and it’s even an important part of my work so I really don’t want to lose my physique. But that alone isn’t enough sometimes so I’m always looking for new goals to work towards so that I’m always chasing something.
How can I enjoy my favourite foods while still achieving my fitness goals?
A lot of people always ask me how I can maintain my physique despite drinking and eating fast or unhealthy food fairly often. First of all, I don’t think my visceral fat appreciates my bad habits even though they can’t be seen superficially. But, knowing that, I do try to have totally clean meals regularly and I sometimes do intermittent fasting to reset my body. Plus, I’m always working out in the gym or playing football so I burn a lot of the excess calories. Most importantly, the high muscle percentage makes it easier for me to maintain my current physique as it boosts my metabolism so I always encourage others to pick up the weights too.
I can’t seem to stick to diets. How can I eat better to achieve my fitness goals?
I think that it all starts with understanding the effects of what you eat. For example, we should all avoid carbs especially when we don’t need the energy like on rest days because the excess will just turn to fat. Or, if we need carbs, then maybe healthier options like brown rice. Now, we also know that we should avoid excessive sugar, oil, alcohol and processed foods (SOAP) because they’ll lead to you putting on fat and retaining water weight, making you look bloated. On that note, being well hydrated is also very important to look leaner. So, if you know all these things, start to make better choices more and more often, and the results will follow. Make big changes, get big results. Make small changes, get small results. And the easiest way to start in my opinion is to only have one portion of carbs once a day.
